Indian nationals who had been unlawfully residing in the United States were deported by the United States using a chartered jet, according to the Department of Homeland Security. According to the department, the action was done in collaboration with the Indian government.
The department announced on Friday that the charter jet was dispatched to India on October 22.Kristie A. Canegallo, a senior official carrying out the responsibilities of deputy secretary of homeland security, stated that “Indian nationals without a legal basis to remain in the United States are subject to swift removal, and intending migrants should not fall for the lies of smugglers who proclaim otherwise.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement that it is still dedicated to upholding US immigration laws, punishing illegal immigrants severely, and promoting the use of lawful entry points.
There has been a 55% decrease in encounters along the US southwest border since the Securing the Border Presidential Proclamation and Interim Final Rule was introduced in June 2024.
In fiscal year 2024, DHS claimed that it had undertaken more than 495 foreign flights to return people to more than 145 countries, including India, and deported or repatriated more than 160,000 people.
According to the statement, DHS regularly works with governments in the hemisphere and around the world to make it easier for citizens who don’t have the legal right to stay in the US to return home.
This tactic is a component of a larger plan to lessen irregular migration, encourage legal and safe immigration routes, and hold transnational criminal organizations responsible for smuggling and abusing weaker people.
People from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Egypt, Mauritania, Senegal, Uzbekistan, China, and India have been repatriated by DHS in the last year.
