Global Impact
Meta’s suite of social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Messenger, and WhatsApp, are experiencing a widespread outage across the globe. The outage began shortly before 11 pm IST and has affected thousands of users worldwide.
Reports of Service Disruptions
According to reports on Downdetector.com, users across the globe are experiencing difficulties accessing these popular services. The outage appears to be affecting users in various ways, with some unable to access the platforms entirely, while others are experiencing slow loading times, errors, and difficulties posting content.
Platform-Wise Impact
Facebook: Reports suggest that some users have reported seeing all Facebook posts with zero comments, indicating a potential issue with the platform’s comment functionality.
Instagram: Instagram seems to be most affected by the outage, with approximately 72,000 reports in the US and 31,000 in India.
WhatsApp: About 30,500 reports of WhatsApp being down at peak outage were reported in India, and approximately 12,000 people reported problems with accessing the platform on phones in the US.
Meta’s Response
Meta has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the outage or the expected time of resolution. However, there are indications that some services are slowly starting to come back online for certain users nearly an hour after the initial report.
Second Major Outage in 2024
This is not Meta’s first major outage this year. In March, Meta-owned platforms – Instagram and Facebook – were down due to a glitch. Hundreds of thousands of Facebook and Instagram users were impacted globally for more than two hours.
Users Take to Rival Platform X
People have been flocking to X (formerly Twitter) to share memes and posts about the outage.
Meta’s Apology
Meta acknowledged the technical issue impacting users’ ability to access its apps and apologized for any inconvenience caused. “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible,” it said in a post on social media platform X.
Resolution
WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram are now back online after experiencing a “technical issue”, according to Meta.
