After a poor performance in Sri Lanka, Sanju Samson talked candidly on Friday about doubting his ability to play international cricket and how he overcame it with the support of India’s T20 skipper, Suryakumar Yadav.
Samson was instrumental in India’s 61-run victory over South Africa and became just the fourth hitter to reach consecutive hundreds in Twenty20 Internationals. He amassed 107 runs off 50 balls in an innings that included seven boundaries and ten enormous sixes.
“I genuinely believe that I have experienced more setbacks than victories throughout my career,” Sanju said to media following his game-winning century in Durban.
There are many questions that cross your mind when you fail. You begin to question yourself. Social media undoubtedly contributes to the amount of conversation that people do. However, I believe you also begin to doubt yourself. Are you not suited for a global setting? Why are you unable to succeed at the international level when you’re doing well in the IPL? I used to think like this a lot.But I am aware of my own abilities after years of experience. I know I can help the team and win games if I spend some time at the crease because I can make shots. It’s not like that, I told myself repeatedly.
Support from Surya
Sanju acknowledges the constant assistance he received throughout his difficult time from coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Suryakumar Yadav.
It was crucial to have a coach like Gautam Bhai and a captain like Surya who could help. Through my failures, they provided me with a lot of support. It’s important how they communicate when things go tough,” he remarked.
It is possible for a player to feel lost during a poor phase. Gautam Bhai and Surya called me a lot during that period, telling me what I needed to work on,” he continued.
After Sanju failed to score in two games against Sri Lanka earlier this year in July, Suryakumar Yadav called him and pointed out his batting against spinners’ mechanical shortcomings.
“You’re having trouble against spin, brother,” Surya told me over the phone. Get all of Kerala’s spinners together and use the tough wickets for practice.Because the Indian team captain believes in you and wants you to succeed, you feel more confident when he calls and gives you advice on how to get better after a duck. The faith that has been placed in me is really appreciated, and I believe I have been able to return the favor to the team management.
“I think we’re just getting started. I want to continue honing my skills, preparing diligently, and feeling thankful each time I represent my nation on the field. Every time I on the field, I want to help and win games for India.
