Malayalam cinema has lost a prominent figure with the passing of actor Meghanathan, who died at the age of 60 due to complications from a lung-related illness. The actor breathed his last at a private hospital in Kozhikode while undergoing treatment. His funeral is set to take place at his residence in Shoranur on Thursday.
Meghanathan, celebrated for his compelling portrayals of villainous characters in numerous films, was the third child of iconic actors Balan K. Nair and Sarada Nair. He is survived by his wife, Susmitha, and their daughter, Parvathi.
The Minister for General Education in Kerala, V. Sivankutty, took to social media to extend his condolences, stating, “The acting talent who gave a new look to villain characters. Tributes to actor Meghanathan.” His heartfelt message accompanied a photograph of the late actor, resonating with the sentiments of fans and colleagues alike.
A Prolific Career in Film and Television
Meghanathan began his illustrious career in the Malayalam film industry with his debut in Asthram in 1983. Over the span of more than three decades, he appeared in over 50 films, becoming a prominent figure known for his versatility and intense performances, especially as an antagonist, following in the footsteps of his father.
Some of Meghanathan’s most notable performances include roles in Panchagni, Chamayam, Rajadhani, Bhoomigeetham, Chenkol, Malappuram Haji Mahanaya Joji, Prayikkara Pappan, Udyanapaalakam, Ee Puzhayum Kadannu, and Vaasthavam. His impactful depictions have left an indelible mark on the industry and endeared him to fans and critics alike.
In addition to his extensive film career, Meghanathan was a staple on Malayalam television, featuring in popular serials such as Sthreetvam, Meghasandesham, Kathayariyathe, Snehanjali, and Chitta. His most recent appearance was in the film Samadhana Pusthakam, which was released earlier this year.
